Why Cosmetic Surgery is so Prevalent and Popular in the United States
Article Written by Dr. Jan Zemplenyi
Plastic surgery, a practice that was once widely frowned upon, is now fairly common in society. When surgeons first started performing plastic surgery, it was primarily on patients who needed serious reconstructive surgery. During WWI and WWII, plastic surgery was used on soldiers who had gotten scars out in the battlefield.
Over time, technology has continued to develop. Plastic surgery for cosmetic purposes, which was previously only reserved for celebrities and those with tremendous amounts of money, is now much more affordable and popular. Surgeries are much quicker, safer, and less expensive.
Social Aspects
Social trends have had a large impact on how people perceive cosmetic surgery. The rise of social media has made it possible for people to communicate with one another and share photos around the globe. The concept of a public image has put a large emphasis on appearances, resulting in more people trying to improve how their skin, hair, and clothes look. People should feel comfortable being themselves, but if they wish to change their appearances via cosmetic surgery, they can comfortably do so.
Unhappiness With How You Look
An additional reason why cosmetic surgery may have become so popular is that some people do not feel comfortable in their own skin. Peer pressure could make someone insecure about how they look, think, and behave. Pressures to be a certain way could drive someone to feel unhappy and search for ways to feel comfortable. The two ways someone can become happy with their appearance are to accept yourself for how you look or to change your appearance. If someone ultimately feels they need to change their bodies, plastic surgery is a potential solution.
